About Larchmont (Town of Mamaroneck)
The quality of life in our community is based on the beauty of
its natural surroundings: the green lawns, flowering gardens,
running brooks, playing fields, waterfalls, & winding streets
plus the diversity of the people who have chosen Town of
Mamaroneck Larchmont to call their home. Their were many who
came before this that made our unique
The local history of the Town Of Mamaroneck and Larchmont starts
with 3 necks of land being purchased by a wealthy Boston
Merchant names Richbell from the Siwanoy Indians. The rocky
hills with winding streams, waterfalls, and a large lake were
largely used as farm and pasture landing the beginning. The
falls of the Sheldrake River was the late 19th century site of
the Mott’s Spool Cotton Mill. The Motts were local farmers.
On May 17, 1778 the Town of Mamaroneck was created by act of the
New York Legislature
During the late 19th & early 20th centuries there were many
transportation proposals that began the development of Town of
Mamaroneck Larchmont. IN 1888 a four track line of the New York
New Haven Rail road was completed There was a proposed Boston
Railway 1920; a Pelham- Port Chester Parkway 1909 (never Built);
the Hutchison River Parkway; & New Have Rail line
As these avenues of transportation opened up developers viewed
the area as attractive suburban and country estate
possibilities. Clifford B Harmon began plans for a 140 acre
bungalow development. called Larchmont Gardens in 1911. The site
was along the Sheldrake River and Harmon a planned artificial
lake below the falls now known as Larchmont Gardens Lake or the
“Duck Pond” The boundaries for these Larchmont Gardens Homes
were Myrtle Blve, Palmer Lane, & Lakeside Dr. Overlooking the
Falls Harmon built a clubhouse with wide verandas and tennis
courts. He even considered a 9 hole golf course. All modern
amenities were planned and included.
The Town of Mamaroneck Larchmont was the site C. W. Moody chose
for his 146 acre residential colony in the wooded hills, Rouken
Glenn. The charm lies in beautiful views, quiet roads, bridle
paths & lakes. Moody preserved the wooded rocky slopes and
places the 90 homes to emphasize the natural beauty of the rocks
and foliage.. Homes in Larchmont’s Rouken Glenn also features
water, gas, electric lights, telephone service along with
macadam paved roadways
